Television Can Reduce Children’s School Achievements

In this era, television has become a necessity for most people, both young and old, even children.Television will have a positive impact if we are able to limit ourselves to what shows are feasible and not to watch. Especially for our children, as parents, they should guide and supervise children so that the baby does not have a negative impact. The negative impacts that often arise on children include the behavior of children who mimic what they see on television (eg violence), school performance becomes decreased, poor eating habits, etc.

In two studies in America found that watching too much TV can reduce children’s performance in school and cause poor eating habits, which can cause obesity.┬áBoth studies were conducted to determine the harmful effects of TV and parental power to prevent this effect.

One study found that watching television on weekdays made children’s achievement in school declining. This decline in achievement mainly occurs in children who watch all programs without restrictions from parents.

Researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Montefiore and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Nem York found that watching old TV on weekdays resulted in decreased children’s performance in school. Children who are free to watch any program, including programs for adults, even have worse school achievements.

The second study is to examine the volume and type of food associated with advertising, including advertisements on television shows for children. Researchers find that most advertisements are intended to create long-term relationships between children and certain products rather than increasing sales. Both studies were published in the October issue of Pediatrics .

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (APP), the average American child spends 4 hours every day in front of the TV. This amount of time exceeds what APP recommends 1 to 2 hours per day, including video games and online chat with friends.

Previous studies linked tv exposure to increased obesity in children, aggression and high risk behavior. But most of the studies are about watching TV and consequently done on younger children. In this study, researchers wanted to assess the influence of tv and video games on middle schoolers. In connection with that, researchers examined TV viewing habits on more than 4,500 children from grade 5 to grade 8, asking about watching TV habits and the habit of playing their video games during weekdays and weekends. The experts also examined the achievements of children in school by telling them to judge themselves whether they included students who were very good, good, average, and below average.

Watching TV on weekends does not seem to affect children’s school performance. In children who do not watch TV on weekdays, 50% say their achievements are brilliant compared to 42% in children who watch TV less than 1 hour per day. When the number of hours watching TV rises between 1 and 3 hours every day, the number of children who say that their performance is very good at school drops to 35%.

The contents of the event also took effect. For children whose parents are prohibited from watching adult shows, 54% said their school performance was very good compared to only 22% of children who could watch any program. Watching tv also makes children not chase homework which results in bad children’s grades. Make children not learn sports and learn how to maintain good health.

In a study of advertising on TV broadcasts for children, 50% of advertisements were fast food advertisements, 18% for sweetened cereals. Most advertisements associate food with fun, being happy, having energy or being excited. Even though the nutritional quality of the food advertised is bad. And children cannot find the difference between the ads and events they watch.

According to experts, children may not watch TV more than 2 hours every day. It would be better if watching TV under 1 hour per day. Parents are also advised to use parental block control on TV or via cable television providers to prevent children from accessing adult programs.
